How AI is used
We use AI systems to help identify relevant source material, classify it by topic and editorial suitability, and produce an original draft summary grounded in that source. AI also assists with metadata such as summaries, alt text and suggested internal links.
What AI is never used for
- Inventing facts, figures, quotations, people, companies or sources
- Adding claims that the source material does not support
- Producing content designed only to be indexed rather than read
- Reframing negative or contested material as positive news
Safeguards
Every AI-assisted draft is checked for factual consistency against its source, for excessive similarity to the original wording, and for defamation risk. Drafts that fail those checks are blocked from automatic publication and sent to human review. Where our settings require approval, no article is published without an editor releasing it.
Disclosure
Articles that were drafted with AI assistance retain an internal provenance record covering the source URL, source headline and publisher, source and retrieval timestamps, generation time, model identifier, verification status and editor approval. We do not claim that AI-assisted content has been independently verified when it has not.
Images
Where no legally usable photograph is available, we publish a clearly credited AI-generated illustrative image. We avoid imagery that implies a specific real-world event took place. See our attribution policy.
Reader recourse
If an AI-assisted article contains an error, our corrections process applies exactly as it does to any other article.
