Alkagesta, the Malta-headquartered energy and commodity trading house, has promoted Darren Axisa to country manager for Malta, MaltaToday reported on 28 May 2026. He previously served as operations manager within the Alkagesta team.

The appointment reflects the group's expanding operational footprint on the island and its ambition to strengthen Malta's role as a Mediterranean platform for energy storage, logistics and international trading flows.

Axisa brings close to two decades of experience across Malta's maritime, inspection and energy sectors. He began at Saybolt in 2007 as a surveyor in testing, inspection and certification, gaining exposure to the island's major terminals and offshore installations.

He then spent more than thirteen years at Bureau Veritas, from 2009 to May 2023, moving through coordination and management roles that placed him between traders, oil majors, terminals, agents and service providers. He joined Alkagesta in June 2023, moving from the operational side of the industry into a trading group with ambitions in storage, logistics and business development.

"As a Maltese professional, it is a privilege to contribute to the growth of a company that is headquartered here and actively investing in our island''s future," Axisa said. "I am proud to help build a stronger presence of Alkagesta in global commodity trading arena and to support Malta''s evolution into a true international hub for logistics, energy flows, and maritime activity."

For the wider market, the promotion is a small but readable signal. Trading houses that place senior operational people in country roles are usually preparing to handle more physical volume locally, and Malta''s bunkering, storage and transhipment offer sits directly on the central Mediterranean routes that have absorbed rerouted cargo flows over the past two years.
