The study indicates that these emissions can be effectively reduced using mature electrification technologies. One such method is cold ironing, which involves connecting vessels to shore power while at berth.
Another approach mentioned is the use of battery-electric propulsion for ships when they are idling or maneuvering within port limits. This would allow vessels to operate without their main engines in these sensitive areas.
Furthermore, the research points to the potential for converting vessels engaged in short-sea routes to battery-operated systems. This transition could significantly lower emissions for ships operating on shorter, more frequent journeys.
