Named ATLAS, which stands for Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea, the program was unveiled in Washington. Its primary goal is to address the challenges and requirements associated with deploying nuclear technology in maritime applications.
The launch event for the ATLAS initiative reportedly gathered approximately 600 participants. These attendees represented more than 50 countries, indicating broad international interest and involvement in the project.
The initiative signifies a concerted push by the IAEA to explore and enable the use of nuclear power in the shipping sector. This could potentially impact future marine fuel strategies and vessel propulsion technologies.
