Five years after the Indian Point reactor ceased operations, New York State is reportedly re-evaluating the benefits of continuous, fossil-fuel-free electricity generation. Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed a goal to add 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity, according to OilPrice.com.
This initiative includes a target for at least 1 gigawatt to be developed by the New York Power Authority, which is a publicly owned entity. Additionally, a separate 4 gigawatt project is part of the overall plan, as reported by OilPrice.com.
While specific technology choices for these new nuclear projects have not yet been announced, potential candidates are being considered. OilPrice.com indicates that the large Westinghouse AP1000 and the smaller 300 MW BWRX-300 from GE Vernova Hitachi are among the most likely options.
