Thailand intends to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources and incorporate nuclear power for the first time, according to Energy Minister Akanat Promphan, as reported by Bloomberg. This strategic shift aims to reduce the nation's reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The decision to bolster energy security follows the Middle East crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Thailand currently depends on natural gas for over 60% of its electricity generation, making it increasingly reliant on imported LNG.
The Southeast Asian country is now focused on enhancing its energy independence and lessening its vulnerability to external energy supply disruptions. This move is a direct response to recent geopolitical events affecting global energy markets.
