South Carolina Ports and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have signed a feasibility study agreement, according to FreightWaves. This agreement is focused on investigating the potential for deepening the North Charleston Terminal (NCT).
The North Charleston Terminal is currently maintained at a depth of 48 feet. The study aims to determine the viability and implications of increasing this depth to 52 feet, as reported by FreightWaves.
This proposed deepening could significantly impact the port's capacity to handle larger vessels. The Port of Virginia currently states it has the deepest harbor on the East Coast, maintained at 55 feet.
